Which rang a bell, my router a Linksys MAX-Stream AC-1900 EA7500 was setup to only broadcast 802.11ac on the 5GHz band, so the extender was only picking up the 802.11g broadcast. Some adjustment of the router allowed a more respectable throughput when it started picking up the 802.11n transmissions too.
