In my opinion, it’s routing and wireless abilities are total crap. Long ago I installed a Linksys WRT54G router that has been flashed with DD-WRT. This allows bandwidth monitoring, proper port forwarding, and also gives me the ability to connect via VPN remotely to help them out with problems on rare occasion.

It can only act as a passthrough device. I am not that familiar with DDWRT but check with their forums if they have a firmware that will add the VPN function. Unplug the computer you used to configure the AP and plug it back into one of your LAN router's switch ports. Now take an Ethernet cable, plug one end into another unused router switch port and the other end into one of the AP's LAN ports. Be sure to use a LAN port and not the WAN port.
